Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima

“Guru Purnima: A festival helpful in attaining infinite divine knowledge.”

Guru Purnima is on 10th July 2025, and it’s a really special day in Sanatan Sanskriti. It’s not just a holiday; it’s a heartfelt thank you to all the spiritual teachers, or Gurus, who have shown us the way for generations.

In Sanatan Sanskriti, we believe that real wisdom and freedom don’t just come from books. They’re often passed down quietly through the grace of a Guru. A Guru isn’t just a teacher; they’re someone who gets rid of the darkness, helping us find our way through our own thoughts and connect with the divine spark inside us.

The word “Guru” itself means a lot: “Gu” means darkness, and “Ru” means the one who removes it. So, a Guru is someone who takes away the darkness of not knowing, of doubts, and of illusions, guiding us towards truth and understanding ourselves.

On Guru Purnima, we celebrate the birthday of Maharishi Vyasa. He was an incredible sage who put together the Vedas, wrote the Mahabharata, and created the Puranas – a huge gift to human knowledge and spiritual understanding. His life shows us what a Guru truly is: someone who gives wisdom selflessly, keeps sacred traditions alive, and acts as a guiding light for everyone.

But Guru Purnima is about more than just one sage. It’s a day to honor all Gurus – whether they’re our spiritual teachers, our parents, our elders, or even life experiences that have taught us important lessons. It’s a day to think about how much they’ve influenced our journey, helped us grow, and guided us to live a more meaningful life.

In Sanatan Sanskriti, the Guru-shishya parampara (the tradition of Guru and disciple) is super important. This relationship is built on strong faith, devotion, and a real desire to grow. A Guru doesn’t just share knowledge; they awaken our hidden potential, clear our minds, and help us get past our inner struggles. They see beyond our limits and guide us to become our best selves.

Guru Purnima is a powerful reminder of:

The incredible gift of guidance: In a world that’s often confusing, a Guru gives us clarity, direction, and constant support.
How important humility and letting go are: Real learning starts with an open mind and a willingness to set aside our ego for the Guru’s wisdom.
Our ongoing journey of self-discovery: The Guru doesn’t just give us answers; they empower us to find them within ourselves, encouraging a lifelong search for truth.
Being thankful for the wisdom passed down over time: Guru Purnima is a day to appreciate the unbroken line of spiritual masters who have kept and shared sacred knowledge for thousands of years.

So, as we get ready for Guru Purnima, let’s take a moment to think about the Gurus in our own lives – those who have lit up our path, inspired us to grow, and helped us connect with who we truly are. Let’s offer our sincere thanks, ask for their blessings, and promise to continue on the path of dharma with an open heart and mind.

Guru Purnima’s necessity and significance are mentioned in the revered Saint’s satsang-vachanamrit (divine discourses):

“The soul (Jiva) is eternal, God (Ishwar) is eternal, ignorance (Avidya) is eternal, and the relationship between ignorance and consciousness is eternal. The distinction between Jiva and Ishwar is eternal, but they are not infinite; only Brahma is eternal and infinite. By realizing the knowledge of that eternal and infinite, all these other things become tranquil (finite). The influence of these four eternal elements ends, but the pure knowledge does not. To attain such pure knowledge, the tradition was adorned and decorated; therefore, the deities blessed Guru Purnima. Sadhaks (spiritual aspirants) take full advantage of this Purnima.”

“Where the influence of nature’s illusion (Maya) ends, and the fear of the soul’s existence and God ends, yet the knowledge of the essence of God does not end, that Purnima, which is helpful in the system of attaining infinite divine knowledge, is called Guru Purnima.”

May the light of the Gurus always guide us towards peace, wisdom, and freedom!

Jai Guru Dev!
