In Sanskrit ‘Akshaya’ means Imperishable and ‘Tritiya’ means the 3rd phase of the moon. Akshaya Tritiya (Akha Teej or Akti) is an important festival in Sanatan Dharma.
It is one among four Tithis on which one doesn’t even need to look at muhurta & we can start/do any important work like Marriage, Grih-Pravesh (New House Entry), or purchase land, Clothes, Jewellery, and other valuables. On this day, people purchase gold also, it is believed that charity done on this day brings good luck and success.
It is celebrated on Tritiya tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaisakh.
Significance of Akshaya Tritiya (as per the scriptures) in Sanatan Dharma:
- The beginning of Treta Yug
- Birthday of Lord Parshuram
- Birthday of Maa Annapurna
- Lord Ganesha started writing Mahabharat which was narrated by Ved Vyas
- Maa Durga won the battle against Mahishasura
- Surya Dev gave Akshaya Patra (It contained Food that Never Ends) to Yudhishthir
- Lord Shiva granted the position of Treasurer to Kuber
- Avataran (Descent) of Maa Ganga on The earth
- Sudama went to his friend Krishna to seek help. He took flattened paddy (aval) with him. He was very hesitant to ask for help and returned without actually asking for it. But Lord Krishna knew everything, so when Sudama returned to his home, he found everything he needed.
Few rituals/remedies that one can do on this auspicious day:
- Offer Water to Tulsi Plant
Offer fresh water and light a diya (lamp) near the Tulsi plant. It’s believed to attract blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. - Donation (Daan)
Give donations of food, clothes, money, or gold/silver items to the needy. Charity done on Akshay Tritiya is said to bring endless (Akshay) benefits. - Buy Gold or Silver
Purchasing gold or silver is considered highly auspicious today. It symbolizes inviting wealth and good luck into your life. - Chant Mantras
Recite mantras like Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya or Sri Suktam. Chanting these can activate prosperity energies around you. - Perform Lakshmi Puja
Worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu together with flowers, sweets, and lamps to seek their blessings for wealth and abundance. - Feed Cows or Animals
Feeding cows, dogs, birds, or any animals is believed to remove obstacles and improve karma. - Holy Bath
Bathing in holy river is considered auspicious (add Ganga water while taking bath in case one is unable to visit any holy river)
