Kaal Bhairava – “one who ends fear”

I have written articles on festivals, weaving each with its astrological significance. Often, these topics unfold into detailed explorations that cannot be shortened without losing their essence. I invite you to read these narratives in full, to truly experience the depth, energy and timeless wisdom embedded within them.

Bhairava represents Shiva’s fierce and transformative aspect—an incarnation whose very name means “one who ends fear.” Called Kaal Bhairava, he embodies liberation from “Kaal,” the primordial fear of death. Here, “Bhai” means fear and “Rava” means the wail or sound that expresses it. Bhairava’s divine power releases us from this ultimate fear, freeing the soul through the path of transcendence.

The cosmic archetype of Bhairava is formed by the forces of Kaal (Saturn, Rahu) and the intense, dynamic elements (Mars, Ketu). The connection between Kashi (Varanasi) and Kaal Bhairava is eternal. Many associate Kashi with the ninth house and Sagittarius due to its reputation for wisdom and dharma, but in essence, Kashi is the city of liberation, resting on the moksha triangle of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. As tradition says, Kashi rests on Shiva’s trident—the very gateway to moksha—and its story is inseparable from Kaal Bhairava.

Kaal Bhairava Jayanti falls in the month of Mrigashira (Wednesday, November 12, 2025), associated with the Mrigashira Nakshatra—a symbol of curiosity and restlessness, depicted by a deer’s head. Creation itself, according to legend, sprouted from Brahma’s restless curiosity. However, when Brahma’s ego led him to equate himself with the Supreme, Shiva manifested as Bhairava to destroy this ignorance. Bhairava, with a single nail, severed Brahma’s delusion, embarking on a journey through the three worlds until he attained final liberation in Kashi, where he remains the guardian deity—honored as Batuk Bhairava and Kaal Bhairava.

This journey—traversing from the consequences of death in Scorpio to the peace of liberation in Pisces, and ultimately, rest in Cancer—finds its culmination in Kashi. Margashirsha, the birth month of shifting consciousness, frequently sees the Sun in Scorpio, marking the soul’s transformation toward spiritual release. It is on the auspicious Ashtami of Krishna Paksha, during this period, that Kaal Bhairava is said to emerge, breaking the bonds of ignorance, attachment, and the fear of death, guiding our consciousness toward enlightenment and moksha.

At this cosmic junction, both Sun and Moon occupy Cancer and Scorpio, the root points of the moksha trine. Bhairava’s energy breaks through karmic barriers in one’s chart, invoking transformative power that urges us forward along paths of devotion and spiritual freedom. He channels the intense energy of Scorpio, where death and transformation balance, and through the union of Mars and Ketu, he leads us past suffering toward the promise of spiritual liberation.

When your Moon occupies the eighth house or is conjunct Ketu, tradition suggests offering rasgulla and jaggery to Kaal Bhairava: rasgulla, a fermented milk sweet, resonates with the energies of Moon and Ketu, while jaggery signifies the vital force of Mars and Jupiter. This offering embodies surrender of mind and emotion at Bhairava’s feet.

Additionally, wine represents the fiery, dissolving principle of Rahu, removing tamasic qualities and fear, dispelling illusion, and birthing new spiritual vitality within.

Thus, whenever you find yourself confronting difficult influences of Scorpio, the eighth house, or Ketu, seeking refuge in Kaal Bhairava is the most profound remedy—heralding the end of fear and awakening true consciousness.

This is more than a mere article—it is a tribute, a heartfelt invitation to wander Kashi’s ancient lanes and sense the divine presence of Kaal Bhairava at every turn. For years, I wished to offer something in honor of Bhairava Baba, and now, it is fittingly presented on his Jayanti.

Mantra which you have to chant is as follows :
Shree Kaal Bhairavay Namah (श्री कालभैरवाय नमः)
